Residents of Achinakrom, a community in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region, have successfully cleared a 90-year-old refuse dump, marking a major step toward improving sanitation and public health.
The massive cleanup exercise, led by community members and local leaders, has relieved residents who have long endured the environmental and health hazards posed by the long-standing waste site.
Community Leaders Commend Effort, Call for Support
Speaking during the cleanup, the Assembly Member for Achinakrom Electoral Area, Hon. Sampson Kusi, praised residents for their dedication to improving sanitation. He also urged Achinakrom natives living abroad to contribute to the community’s development efforts.
“This cleanup is a testament to the power of unity. I encourage our brothers and sisters abroad to support Achinakrom in any way possible to sustain these efforts,” he said.
Similarly, the Gyasehene of Achinakrom, Nana Osei Nkrumah, called for the provision of waste containers in key locations to prevent indiscriminate dumping and ensure long-term sanitation.
“Now that the refuse dump is gone, we must ensure proper waste disposal. We need bins or containers to maintain a clean environment,” he emphasized.
Improved Sanitation Through Modern Facilities
In addition to the cleanup, the community commissioned a new modern toilet facility to enhance hygiene and combat open defecation. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce sanitation-related diseases such as malaria and cholera.
Residents, expressing their excitement, described the project as a historic achievement that will transform the community’s hygiene and environmental conditions.
The successful cleanup of the 90-year-old refuse dump highlights the power of community-driven development and underscores the need for continuous support from stakeholders to maintain the gains made.
