Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) Sponsors Otumfuo Draughts Competition in Kumasi

Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), the renowned producer of Eagle Lager beer, has partnered with the Manhyia Palace to sponsor the much-anticipated Otumfuo Draughts Competition, held in Kumasi. The event, which attracted a large crowd, celebrated the game of draughts and brought together participants from across the country, including regions such as Ashanti, Central, Volta, Western, Greater Accra, Bono, and the three Northern regions.

The competition, which took place at the historic Manhyia Palace, showcased the skills of players from diverse backgrounds, all competing for the top spots. Winners received significant rewards, with cash prizes ranging from 10,000 to 2,000, along with a trophy, medals, and products from ABL. All participants were also given certificates of participation in recognition of their involvement in the event.

Mr. George Nii Quaye, the National President of the Draughts Association, highlighted the long history of the game, which has been enjoyed for over a century. However, he emphasized that there is a pressing need to change the perception surrounding draughts. According to Mr. Quaye, the game is not only a source of entertainment but also an educational tool that stimulates the mind through its mathematical calculations and strategic thinking.

“The game of draughts is over 100 years old, but the mentality surrounding it needs to evolve. It’s an educative game that encourages critical thinking and enhances cognitive abilities,” Mr. Quaye remarked. He further revealed that the Draughts Association is developing a plan to introduce the game at various educational levels, starting from Junior High Schools to Universities. The aim is to teach students the skills necessary to excel in the game, eventually promoting them from local to international competitions.

Despite the success of the competition, Mr. Quaye also pointed out the challenges faced by the association due to a lack of sponsorship. He expressed his gratitude to Accra Brewery Limited for their commitment to supporting the Otumfuo Draughts Competition. Mr. Quaye urged the government and other stakeholders to recognize the importance of draughts and support initiatives that aim to grow the game and its players in Ghana.

“We are grateful to ABL for their support. Their sponsorship of this event is a huge step toward fostering local talent and promoting the game of draughts in Ghana. However, we still need more backing, and we call on the government and other stakeholders to invest in the growth of draughts,” he said.

Participants in the competition also shared their gratitude towards ABL for making the event possible. Many of them expressed a desire to change the negative perception that the game is for “lazy people,” urging the public to recognize the game’s intellectual and cultural value. Some participants even took the opportunity to promote the health benefits of Eagle Lager beer, linking it to the theme of mental sharpness and well-being.

“Draughts is a game that requires focus and strategic thinking, and it’s high time people understand its true value. We also encourage people to enjoy Eagle Lager, which is not just refreshing but also beneficial for health,” one of the participants said.

As the competition came to a close, it was clear that the Otumfuo Draughts Competition, under the sponsorship of ABL, has made a significant impact on the promotion of Ghanaian culture and sports. The event showcased the potential for draughts to grow into a more widely recognized and respected activity in Ghana.

Accra Brewery Limited’s sponsorship has set a positive precedent, and the hope is that more companies and institutions will follow suit, investing in the development of local games and sports.
