The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has declared that the wave of arrests of individuals accused of corruption and financial impropriety is only the beginning of a wider campaign to ensure accountability in public service. His remarks were delivered during a durbar of chiefs and residents in the Atewa East Constituency on Thursday, September 25, as part of the second phase of his Thank You Tour of the Eastern Region.

Addressing the gathering, Asiedu Nketiah stated that the ongoing efforts to investigate and arrest persons involved in the misuse of public funds will be intensified in the coming months. He noted that the country cannot make progress if corruption continues to thrive unchecked, insisting that anyone who had taken undue advantage of the state’s resources would be made to answer for their actions. According to him, the arrests so far represent only the initial stages of what is intended to be a far-reaching anti-corruption drive.

He stressed that this initiative will not be guided by political considerations, but by the principle of justice and fairness. In his words, accountability must apply to all, regardless of which political party they belonged to or which position they once held. For him, the time has come for leaders who betrayed the trust of the people to be held to the same standards as any other citizen.

The NDC Chairman further called on traditional authorities, religious leaders, and Muslim clerics to lend their voice and influence to the fight against corruption. He observed that chiefs, pastors, and imams remain powerful moral anchors in society and can play an important role in reminding leaders that public service is about sacrifice, not self-enrichment. He emphasized that corruption weakens the foundation of communities, undermines democracy, and denies ordinary Ghanaians the opportunities they deserve.

Asiedu Nketiah also highlighted the urgent need to rebuild public trust in governance. He explained that many citizens have lost faith in political leadership due to years of unpunished corruption, and insisted that restoring accountability is the only way to rekindle confidence in national institutions. By ensuring that justice is served without fear or favor, he said, the country can begin to heal the deep wounds left by mismanagement and financial impropriety.

The durbar was attended by chiefs, opinion leaders, youth groups, and party supporters who responded warmly to the NDC Chairman’s message. Some community leaders, while welcoming the anti-corruption stance, cautioned that the campaign must be pursued with impartiality to avoid perceptions of political witch-hunting.

Asiedu Nketiah’s firm declaration signals the likelihood of more high-profile arrests in the months ahead, with the promise of deeper investigations into past financial misconduct. While political analysts say the effectiveness of this campaign will depend on how consistently and fairly it is carried out, one thing is certain: the NDC Chairman has made it clear that accountability is coming, and the culture of unchecked embezzlement will no longer be tolerated.
