Abuakwa Residents Benefit from Free Health Screening as MCE Promotes Preventive Healthcare

Hundreds of residents in Abuakwa, a community within the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, have benefited from a free health screening exercise organized by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Wisdom Boamah, in collaboration with the Anigyeɛ Fun Club.

The initiative, which coincided with this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, sought to promote early detection of diseases and encourage residents to embrace preventive healthcare practices. The exercise attracted people of all ages, including traders, artisans, students, and the elderly, who underwent comprehensive medical examinations for various conditions such as breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes, malaria, and other lifestyle-related diseases.

In his address, Hon. Wisdom Boamah emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups and healthy living as key pillars for community development. He noted that many illnesses can be effectively managed or prevented altogether if detected early, stressing the need for residents to make personal health a top priority. “Take good care of your health to avoid future illnesses. Regular medical check-ups help detect diseases early, making treatment easier and more effective,” he advised.

The MCE lauded the Anigyeɛ Fun Club for partnering with the Assembly to organize the health screening, describing the gesture as a true demonstration of community spirit and shared responsibility. He reiterated that healthcare is not solely the duty of government but a collective effort that requires the involvement of all stakeholders, including social groups, NGOs, and traditional authorities.

Hon. Boamah reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to promoting community-based health programs and preventive medicine across all towns and communities in the municipality. He also disclosed that plans are underway to collaborate with local health facilities to sustain similar outreach programs that bring healthcare closer to residents.

Adding her voice to the call for preventive healthcare, the Queen Mother of Nkawie Kumaa, Ohene Yere Adoma Akosua, encouraged women to visit health facilities regularly for screening and early diagnosis of potential illnesses. She noted that many lives could be saved if people made the effort to check their health status frequently. “Go to the hospital for screening every month to know your illness status for easy identification and early treatment,” she urged.

Health professionals who conducted the screening took time to educate participants on breast self-examination, good nutrition, and personal hygiene. They also distributed educational materials on breast cancer prevention and healthy lifestyle practices to promote public awareness on disease prevention.

Residents who benefited from the free screening expressed profound gratitude to Hon. Wisdom Boamah, the Anigyeɛ Fun Club, and the Municipal Health Directorate for organizing such a vital community service. Many described the initiative as timely, given the increasing cost of healthcare and the prevalence of preventable diseases in the area.

The free health screening at Abuakwa forms part of a broader campaign by the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly to promote a culture of preventive healthcare and to complement the national effort to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases. Hon. Boamah reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to continue supporting community-driven health initiatives that safeguard the well-being of residents and strengthen the municipality’s public health system.
