The royal family of Abofour, led by Abusuapanyin Moses Amponsa, is crying foul over what they describe as a shocking attempt by the Offinsohene and his traditional council to hijack the chieftaincy succession process in Abofour.
In a press briefing, Abusuapanyin Amponsa explained that the family, following the passing of their chief and queen mother, sought to settle the succession dispute at the Offinso Palace—as directed by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Their intention, he said, was to allow for a peaceful and traditional process to select the rightful heirs.
However, what was expected to be a family-centered resolution turned into what the royal family describes as an orchestrated plan to strip the current Abusuapanyin of his title and impose a new leadership aligned with the interests of the Offinsohene and his associates.
“They tried to silence us, remove me as the family head, and prevent us from speaking about lands that have already been sold illegally. When I protested and swore the great oath of Otumfuo, they saw me as a threat,” Amponsa narrated.
In a disturbing turn of events, the family claims that a linguist (kyeame) from the Offinso Palace, identified as Kwaku, led an attack on the Abofour delegation. Abusuapanyin Amponsa and several family members were allegedly beaten in the presence of traditional leaders.
“We were humiliated. I was assaulted for standing for truth and tradition. This is not the way of Asanteman,” he said emotionally.
Abusuapanyin Amponsa is now appealing directly to Otumfuo to immediately halt the Offinsohene’s actions and ensure that the rightful customs are followed. He further warns that the Offinsohene is planning to install his preferred candidates as Abusuapanyin and new traditional leaders on Monday, April 14, 2025, without the backing of the royal family of Abofour.
“This is not only disrespectful—it is dangerous. We are also calling on the Ghana Government, the Ministry of Chieftaincy, and all lawful authorities to intervene before this turns into a larger conflict,” he said.
One of the assaulted family members has also broken his silence, sharing a chilling account of the incident at the palace.
