Aboboyaa Involved in Accident at Adum Prisons Roundabout; No Casualty Recorded

An Aboboyaa rider transporting crates of wheat drinks was involved in a serious accident on Tuesday morning at the Prisons Roundabout near Adum in Kumasi, causing panic among bystanders and commuters.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the tricycle—popularly known as Aboboyaa—developed a brake fault while descending the slope near the roundabout. The rider, upon realizing the brakes had failed, reportedly leapt off the moving tricycle in a desperate attempt to save himself, hitting the ground hard and falling unconscious.

“The tricycle was loaded with drinks and it looked like he was coming from the Central Market side. Suddenly, we saw the rider jump off and roll on the ground. The tricycle kept moving until it slammed into the wall of the ADB building,” an eyewitness told reporters.

The impact of the crash shattered some of the crates on the tricycle, spilling the wheat drinks across the road and drawing a crowd of onlookers. Despite the intensity of the accident, no casualties were recorded.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service quickly arrived at the scene to manage traffic and ensure the area was safe. The unconscious rider was rushed to a nearby health facility by good Samaritans for medical attention.

As of the time of reporting, he was responding to treatment.
Officials have begun investigations into the exact cause of the incident, though initial reports point to mechanical failure—specifically faulty brakes—as the likely reason behind the accident.

The incident once again raises concerns about the safety of tricycles on busy urban roads, especially those used for transporting goods in congested commercial areas like Adum.

Authorities are urging all tricycle operators to regularly service their vehicles and ensure they are roadworthy to prevent such avoidable incidents.
