Residents of Nkoranza in the Atwima-Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region are decrying the deteriorating state of their roads and worsening sanitation conditions, calling on authorities to intervene before the situation escalates.
The road linking Nkoranza to Ampabame No. 2, which was under construction, has reportedly been abandoned by the contractor, Kofi Job. As a result, thick clouds of dust have engulfed the community, posing serious health hazards to residents.
“Every day, we struggle with dust. It’s affecting our health, causing persistent coughs, respiratory infections, and eye irritation. If the contractor is not returning soon, authorities must ensure the road is watered regularly,” a concerned resident pleaded.
Business owners in the area are also feeling the brunt of the dusty conditions, with traders complaining that their goods are being ruined, leading to a decline in sales and financial losses.
“Our products are always covered in dust. Customers refuse to buy, and we are losing our capital. If this continues, many of us will have no choice but to shut down our businesses,” lamented a trader at the local market.
Beyond the road crisis, sanitation has become another major challenge for residents, particularly in the new site, where indiscriminate dumping of waste and open defecation have become rampant. Many fear a possible outbreak of diseases if urgent measures are not taken.
“The level of filth in this community is alarming. The authorities need to act now before we face serious health problems,” another resident stressed.
The people of Nkoranza are calling on the Atwima-Kwanwoma District Assembly and other relevant stakeholders to prioritize the completion of the road, ensure regular watering to reduce dust, and implement effective sanitation measures to safeguard public health.
For now, residents remain hopeful that their voices will be heard before conditions deteriorate further.
