In a decisive move to curb the illegal drug trade, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has arrested four individuals for engaging in the sale of illicit substances in the city. The operation, conducted by the Assembly’s Internal Security Task Force, took place on Monday, March 16, 2026, behind the Ashtown Post Office, a known sanitation area hotspot.

The suspects, whose identities are currently being withheld pending further investigations, have been handed over to the Kumasi Central Police Command for legal processing and continued inquiry.

During the operation, authorities recovered significant quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, a locally manufactured pistol, packs of cigarettes, hard drugs, boxes of “Mashallah” (Ataya), cash, and other materials believed to pose a threat to public safety and health.

The KMA reiterated its commitment to maintaining law, order, and the safety of all residents in the metropolis. In a statement issued by the Assembly’s Public Relations Unit, officials called on the public to remain vigilant and support ongoing security efforts by reporting suspicious activities and cooperating with law enforcement authorities.

“This operation is part of our ongoing strategy to safeguard Kumasi against illegal drug activities and other criminal acts. We urge residents to assist in keeping our city safe by remaining alert and working closely with the authorities,” the statement said.

The Assembly’s crackdown underscores its proactive approach to public safety and its determination to eliminate illegal drug distribution networks within the metropolis. Authorities have assured that such operations will continue to ensure a secure environment for all residents and businesses in Kumasi.
