The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyemang, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to enforcing planning regulations and ensuring orderly development within the Kumasi metropolis following decisive action taken at the Daban New Site.
During a routine field inspection exercise, Hon. Ofori-Agyemang and his team encountered several individuals actively undertaking construction works without the requisite authorization from the Assembly. The developments, which included the construction of buildings and warehouse facilities, were reportedly progressing without approved building permits and the mandatory technical inspections required under the Assembly’s planning guidelines.
Concerned about the apparent breach of laid-down procedures, the Metropolitan Chief Executive immediately directed that all ongoing construction activities be suspended. He further instructed the developers involved to report to the Assembly’s offices to regularize their documentation and subject their projects to the appropriate statutory inspections before any work could resume.
Hon. Ofori-Agyemang stressed that compliance with building and planning regulations is not merely a bureaucratic requirement but a critical safeguard for public safety, environmental protection, and sustainable urban growth. He noted that unauthorized structures pose significant risks, including structural defects, poor spatial planning, and potential safety hazards to occupants and the general public.
The KMA Boss underscored that the Assembly will not hesitate to apply the necessary sanctions against individuals or entities who flout established planning laws. He emphasized that the enforcement drive is not intended to frustrate developers but to ensure that all construction activities align with approved layouts and engineering standards.
He also urged prospective developers and property owners to engage the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly at the earliest stages of their projects to secure the required permits and technical approvals, thereby avoiding disruptions, financial losses, and possible legal consequences.
The intervention at Daban forms part of the Assembly’s broader strategy to strengthen monitoring and enforcement across the metropolis. It reflects the renewed resolve of city authorities to promote structured expansion, enhance infrastructure coordination, and safeguard the integrity of physical developments as Kumasi continues to grow as a major commercial and cultural hub in the Ashanti Region.
