In a bid to strengthen media capacity and promote informed reporting on marine and fisheries issues in Ghana, Professor Berchie Asiedu has been announced as a key facilitator for the upcoming journalists’ training on effective media coverage of marine matters.

Professor Asiedu brings a wealth of experience in fisheries management, aquaculture development, and marine governance to the training. He currently serves as the Acting Deputy Executive Director (Technical) at the Fisheries Commission, providing strategic leadership on national fisheries policies and programs.

Beyond this role, he is an active member of the National Blue Economy Strategy Technical Committee, contributing to Ghana’s long-term framework for sustainable marine and aquatic resource management. He also serves on the National Committee on Aquaculture and participates in a Technical Committee tasked with facilitating the operationalization of fisheries and transport-related infrastructure across the country.

Professor Asiedu’s expertise extends internationally. He has conducted extensive fisheries and aquaculture research and fieldwork in countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Liberia, Nigeria, Mauritius, Senegal, and the United Kingdom. His global exposure has enriched his understanding of best practices in marine resource management, stock assessment, aquaculture systems, and sustainable blue economy initiatives.

Over the years, he has undertaken numerous research projects and consultancy assignments for leading international organizations such as the African Union, European Union, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, United States Agency for International Development, and Oxfam. Through these engagements, he has contributed to policy development, capacity building, and sustainable fisheries reforms across Africa and beyond.

With his extensive academic, technical, and policy background, Professor Asiedu is expected to provide journalists with in-depth insights into Ghana’s marine governance framework, emerging blue economy opportunities, fisheries regulation, and the critical role of responsible journalism in safeguarding the country’s marine resources.

The training aims to equip journalists with the knowledge and tools required to report accurately, responsibly, and effectively on marine and fisheries issues, thereby enhancing public awareness and promoting accountability within Ghana’s blue economy sector.
