The Assembly Member for Manso Takorase, Dominic Bonsu, has extended a significant gesture of support to the Orthopaedic Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) by donating essential medical equipment and paying GH¢12,000 to facilitate the discharge of a patient who had remained on admission due to financial constraints.

The presentation, which took place at the hospital premises, formed part of Mr. Bonsu’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and supporting critical health institutions beyond his electoral area. The donated items included a standing blood pressure apparatus, a dressing trolley, wheelchairs, bed frames, and a vital signs monitor to enhance patient care within the Orthopaedic Unit.

The financial intervention brought relief to a patient who had completed treatment but was unable to settle outstanding medical bills. By settling the GH¢12,000 debt, Mr. Bonsu ensured the patient’s discharge, easing both the emotional and financial burden on the family while also freeing up bed space for other patients in need of care.

Addressing hospital authorities and staff during the presentation, Mr. Bonsu emphasised that national development, particularly in the health sector, requires collective responsibility.
“Government alone cannot shoulder the entire responsibility of development. As individuals and leaders, we must contribute our quota to support institutions like Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which serves countless people across the Ashanti Region and beyond,” he stated.

He noted that the hospital continues to record a growing number of trauma and orthopaedic cases, many of which are linked to road traffic accidents. According to him, such trends place additional pressure on health facilities and underscore the need for sustained support from stakeholders and philanthropists.

Mr. Bonsu further disclosed plans to make a major donation to the hospital in the near future to further strengthen service delivery and improve patient outcomes.

Receiving the items on behalf of the hospital, the Head of the Orthopaedic Unit, Dr. Michael Lit, expressed appreciation for the Assembly Member’s timely intervention. He described the donation as impactful, particularly at a time when the unit is experiencing an increasing influx of patients.

Dr. Lit indicated that the ward continues to face challenges, including inadequate space to accommodate the rising number of fracture and trauma cases, many of which involve young people and commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as ‘Pragia’ riders.

He therefore urged drivers to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations to help reduce accidents and lessen the burden on healthcare facilities.
Hospital management commended Mr. Bonsu for his generosity and sense of social responsibility, noting that the equipment donated would significantly enhance the efficiency of the Orthopaedic Unit and contribute to improved quality of care.

The intervention underscores the vital role of community leadership and public-private collaboration in sustaining quality healthcare services and supporting institutions that remain central to the wellbeing of citizens.
