The Assembly Member for Manso Takorase, Dominic Bonsu, has demonstrated a strong commitment to healthcare delivery with a generous donation of medical equipment and the settlement of a GH¢12,000 hospital bill for a patient at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The donation, presented to the Orthopaedic Unit of the hospital, forms part of Mr. Bonsu’s broader effort to support critical health services and complement government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the country.

The items donated included a standing blood pressure apparatus, a dressing trolley, wheelchairs, bed frames, and a vital signs monitor. The equipment is expected to enhance patient management and improve the quality of care provided to trauma and orthopaedic patients at the facility.

In addition to the medical supplies, Mr. Bonsu paid GH¢12,000 to secure the discharge of a patient who had remained on admission due to financial constraints. The intervention brought relief to the patient and family while easing pressure on the facility’s bed capacity.

Speaking during the presentation, Mr. Bonsu emphasised that national development is a shared responsibility and urged individuals, corporate bodies, and philanthropists to support healthcare institutions.

“Government alone cannot carry the entire burden of development. We must all play our part in supporting institutions like Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which serves thousands of people daily,” he stated.

He further noted that the hospital continues to record increasing trauma and fracture-related cases, underscoring the need for sustained support to maintain high standards of healthcare delivery. Mr. Bonsu also disclosed plans to make an even larger donation to the hospital in the near future as part of his commitment to strengthening the health sector.

Receiving the items on behalf of the hospital, the Head of the Orthopaedic Unit, Dr. Michael Lit, expressed profound appreciation for the Assembly Member’s timely intervention. However, he used the occasion to draw attention to the rising number of orthopaedic cases being recorded at the facility, largely attributed to road traffic accidents.

According to Dr. Lit, the ward is witnessing a significant influx of patients, with the majority being young people, particularly commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as ‘Pragia’ riders. He disclosed this in an interview with Adom News during the donation exercise.

Dr. Lit urged drivers and ‘Pragia’ riders to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations to help curb the growing trend of accidents.

“If you visit the Orthopaedic Ward at Komfo Anokye, you will realise that the wards are becoming overcrowded because many young people engage in reckless driving, which often results in road crashes,” he lamented.
He further indicated that inadequate space remains one of the major challenges confronting the unit, especially in the management of patients with fractures.

“Our biggest challenge has to do with space. We need more room to properly manage patients with fractures, but currently, we are forced to manage with the limited space available,” he added.
Management of the hospital commended Mr. Bonsu for his generosity, describing the gesture as impactful and a demonstration of responsible leadership. They noted that the support would significantly enhance service delivery within the Orthopaedic Unit and contribute to improved patient care outcomes.

The intervention highlights the importance of collaborative efforts between public institutions and community leaders in sustaining quality healthcare services in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
