The Asante Akim Central Municipal Assembly has officially cut sod for the construction of an ultra-modern Basic STEM School at Nyaboo, marking a landmark moment in the municipality’s drive to enhance science and technology education.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Rev. Dr. Ekow Aidoo, called on parents across the municipality to actively engage in their children’s education and encourage them to approach learning with seriousness and dedication.

Addressing traditional authorities, assembly members, education officials, parents, and residents, Hon. Rev. Dr. Aidoo emphasised that while government investment in educational infrastructure is crucial, parental involvement remains vital in shaping the academic success and discipline of young learners.

“Advise your wards to take their learning seriously. The future we are building for them through this STEM school will only be meaningful if they are committed to their studies,” he stated.

The proposed STEM Basic School, located in the Asante Akim Central Municipal, is designed to provide a modern learning environment with well-equipped science laboratories, ICT facilities, and practical training spaces. The facility aims to nurture innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among pupils at the basic level, creating a foundation for excellence in science and technology education.

Hon. Rev. Dr. Aidoo noted that the initiative aligns with the national vision of President John Dramani Mahama, who has consistently emphasised the transformation of Ghana’s education system, particularly through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). He highlighted that fostering strong STEM skills at the basic level is essential to prepare young people for the demands of a global, technology-driven economy.

He described the sod-cutting ceremony as a historic milestone for Nyaboo and the entire municipality, adding that the Assembly remains committed to expanding access to quality education and improving learning outcomes across the district.

A representative from the Municipal Education Directorate, the Deputy Director in charge of Supervision and Monitoring, Mr. Agbeko, underscored the strategic importance of STEM education as a driver of economic growth, innovation, and job creation. He noted that STEM education goes beyond theoretical classroom learning and serves as a catalyst for entrepreneurship and national development.

“STEM education is the engine of transformation. Today, Asante Akim Central begins building a permanent home for the brilliance and potential of our children,” he remarked, urging teachers to prepare effectively to maximise the benefits of the new facility.

The Akwamuhene of Nyaboo, speaking on behalf of the traditional authorities, expressed profound gratitude to President Mahama and Hon. Rev. Dr. Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo for the initiative. He described the project as a major boost to education in the area and assured the Assembly of the chiefs’ full support to ensure its successful completion.

The ceremony attracted municipal officials, education stakeholders, traditional leaders, and community members, all of whom hailed the initiative as a transformative step towards positioning Asante Akim Central as a hub for science and technology-driven education in the Ashanti Region.

Upon completion, the ultra-modern STEM Basic School is expected to significantly improve access to quality science education, foster innovation among young learners, and contribute meaningfully to the long-term development of the municipality.
