The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has launched a comprehensive operation to clamp down on unauthorized transport fare increments within the Kumasi metropolis, following growing public concern over arbitrary charges imposed by some commercial drivers.
The exercise, spearheaded by the Ashanti Regional Joint Security Taskforce, is primarily targeting major commercial corridors, including the busy Kejetia–Santasi route, where commuters have reported instances of drivers charging fares above approved rates.
According to REGSEC, the operation forms part of deliberate efforts to protect passengers from exploitation and to ensure strict compliance with transport fare directives agreed upon by transport unions and relevant regulatory authorities in consultation with government.
Addressing the media during the exercise, the Taskforce Commander, Mr. Alfred, underscored the Council’s resolve to restore discipline and fairness within the public transport system.
“We have received several complaints from commuters about unauthorized fare increments. REGSEC will not allow any driver to take undue advantage of passengers. We are committed to safeguarding the interests of the public and ensuring that approved fares are strictly adhered to,” he stated.
Mr. Alfred explained that the operation involves strategic monitoring, random checks, and direct engagement with both drivers and passengers to verify compliance. Drivers found culpable are being cautioned, directed to refund excess charges, and in some cases, processed for further sanctions in accordance with the law.
He stressed that the enforcement exercise is not intended to harass commercial drivers but rather to promote order, transparency, and adherence to established regulations governing the transport sector.
Meanwhile, Government Appointee George Kwame Bediako reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety, comfort, and economic protection of citizens. He acknowledged the challenges commuters face, particularly during peak hours, and assured that the administration remains proactive in addressing such concerns.
“The government is fully aware of the difficulties commuters encounter, especially during rush hours. We are determined to ensure that no Ghanaian is subjected to unfair treatment or arbitrary fare increases,” Mr. Bediako noted.
Commuters who witnessed the operation described it as a timely intervention, expressing optimism that sustained enforcement would deter errant drivers and bring relief to passengers who rely heavily on public transport for their daily activities.
REGSEC has encouraged the public to report any instances of unauthorized fare increments to the appropriate authorities, assuring that swift and decisive action will be taken against offenders.
