MTN Ghana Partners McKingTorch Africa, Buzstop Boys to Clean Sakumono Beach

MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability through a major cleanup exercise at the Sakumono Mighty Beach, undertaken on Thursday as part of activities marking its annual Sustainability Week. The initiative, carried out in partnership with McKingTorch Africa and the Buzstop Boys, brought together staff volunteers and environmental advocates in a spirited campaign to restore and protect one of Tema’s most threatened coastal spaces.

For two hours, MTN staff and partner organizations worked hand in hand to collect and segregate large volumes of waste scattered along the shoreline. Items gathered included plastic bottles, footwear, Styrofoam pieces, discarded fabrics, and other debris, all of which were earmarked for recycling. The cleanup not only cleared visible pollutants from the beach but also underscored the need for sustained action to preserve Ghana’s coastal ecosystems.

Once known as a thriving home for mangroves, sea turtles, and various bird species, the Sakumono Mighty Beach has over the years suffered significant environmental degradation. Poorly managed stormwater drainage systems in surrounding communities have intensified pollution levels, threatening both marine life and the area’s tourism potential. MTN Ghana and its partners believe that consistent cleanup exercises and public education can help reverse the trend and restore the beach’s ecological balance.

The cleanup formed part of MTN Ghana’s Sustainability Week celebration, which runs until November 17, 2025. The initiative mirrors the MTN Group’s overarching theme, “Making a Positive Difference to the Environment,” and aligns with the United Nations’ 2011 declaration of the “International Year of the Forest”—a reminder of the global responsibility to protect natural habitats.

Beyond the week-long observance, MTN Ghana continues to embed environmental responsibility into its long-term operations under its Ambition 2025 Strategic Commitment, driven by strong Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. The company has rolled out several green initiatives, including the introduction of biodegradable SIM cards, installation of solar energy systems at its headquarters, and the implementation of waste reduction and recycling programs across its operations.

Sustainability Week also featured a series of interactive engagements such as “Lunch and Learn,” “Eco Talk,” and “Bright Conversations,” aimed at deepening environmental consciousness among staff and community members. These platforms provided space for discussions on climate resilience, waste management, responsible consumption, and the role of digital innovation in promoting sustainable development.

Through partnerships, community engagement, and strategic environmental investments, MTN Ghana continues to position itself as a key driver of sustainable development in the telecommunications sector. The company says its goal is not only to participate in environmental stewardship but to lead by example—demonstrating how corporate entities can actively contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Ghana.
