Kojo Marfo, Kwame Adinkrah, and Nana Osei Asare Back GJA’s Vision for a Resilient Journalism Fraternity

Three of Kumasi’s most respected broadcast journalists — Mr. Kojo Marfo of Abusua FM, Mr. Kwame Adinkrah of Pure FM, and Mr. Ransford Nana Osei Asare of Akoma FM — have thrown their full support behind the new leadership of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) as it embarks on a mission to rebuild and strengthen the journalism fraternity in the region.
The endorsement came during a working tour by the Ashanti Regional GJA Executives to selected media houses in Kumasi as part of their ongoing membership drive and stakeholder engagement program. The tour is aimed at rekindling unity among journalists, encouraging professional development, and reinforcing the role of the GJA as the foremost body representing the interests and welfare of media practitioners in the region.
Led by the Regional Chairman, Mr. Kofi Adu Domfeh, the GJA delegation visited Abusua FM (EIB Network), Pure FM, and Akoma FM, where they held productive discussions with station managers, senior journalists, and staff on how best to collaborate to strengthen the Association and elevate journalism standards in Ashanti and Ghana as a whole.
At Abusua FM, Mr. Domfeh and his team were received by Mr. Kojo Marfo, a seasoned journalist and Programs Manager for the station. The two sides engaged in an insightful dialogue on the future of journalism and the role of the Association in safeguarding media freedom, professionalism, and welfare.
Mr. Marfo praised the new executives for their outreach initiative, describing it as a “revival of the GJA spirit” in the region. He emphasized the importance of having a strong and well-organized Association that can guide young journalists, promote ethical journalism, and stand firm in defending the interests of practitioners.
He further highlighted the need for the unionization of the GJA, saying it would enable the Association to push more effectively for better working conditions, job security, and fair compensation for journalists, many of whom continue to work under challenging circumstances.
The GJA team continued to Pure FM, where they interacted with Mr. Kwame Adinkrah, the station’s renowned broadcaster and morning show host. Mr. Adinkrah, who has over two decades of experience in the industry, commended the Association’s renewed commitment to engaging the media community. He stressed that a vibrant and active GJA would serve as a unifying platform for journalists, enabling them to collectively uphold professionalism and protect the integrity of the media profession.
He assured the Association of Pure FM’s full support in its membership drive and urged journalists to actively participate in GJA programs, workshops, and policy discussions that impact their work. “We must build a community of journalists who look out for one another, who stand for truth, and who continue to raise the standards of our craft,” he said.
The final stop of the tour was at Akoma FM, where the executives met Mr. Ransford Nana Osei Asare, the Head of Station. Mr. Asare expressed his excitement about the Association’s renewed vigor and vision. He noted that for journalism to thrive, continuous training and collaboration were essential, particularly in adapting to the rapidly changing media landscape shaped by technology and digital platforms.
He also urged the GJA leadership to focus more on welfare and capacity-building initiatives, adding that media practitioners need both professional and institutional support to deliver quality journalism in the service of society.
In his remarks at each media house, Mr. Kofi Adu Domfeh emphasized that the membership drive was part of the Association’s broader agenda to restructure and reinvigorate GJA activities in the region. He encouraged managers of media institutions to motivate their journalists to register with the Association, stressing that a united and active membership base would give the GJA a stronger voice to champion the interests of journalists.
“We want to create an Association that every journalist can identify with—one that supports you, speaks for you, and empowers you to grow in this profession,” Mr. Domfeh stated.
Accompanying him on the tour was the Regional Secretary, Ms. Beatrice Spio-Garbrah, who reiterated the Association’s commitment to collaboration, inclusivity, and professionalism. She expressed appreciation to all the media managers and staff for their warm reception and pledges of support.
The Ashanti Regional GJA executives are expected to continue their engagements with other media houses across the region in the coming weeks as part of efforts to revitalize the Association, strengthen its structures, and promote ethical and responsible journalism in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
