The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua,Hon. Seth Osei-Akoto has expressed his deepest condolences to the families and communities mourning the loss of loved ones in two recent tragedies — the canoe accident at Achiase and the galamsey pit collapse at Kasotie.

Although currently on an international assignment, the MP has extended a heartfelt message of solidarity, describing the incidents as devastating and avoidable losses that must prompt collective reflection, responsibility, and reform.

The first tragedy occurred in the farming community of Achiase, where a canoe ferrying residents across the Offin River capsized, leading to two(2) deaths. Investigations and eyewitness accounts suggest that the incident was due to the inexperience of the paddler, who was reportedly unfamiliar with navigating the river’s currents and depths.

The victims, believed to be commuting for their daily activities, were thrown into the river when the canoe overturned. Sadly, they were not wearing life jackets, and rescue efforts were hampered by the strong current.

In the second incident, a mining pit collapsed in the community of Kasotie, claiming the lives of seven(7) miners. The collapse occurred as they were working underground without proper support structures or safety precautions — a common risk in unregulated mining.

Hon.Seth Osei Akoto lamented the loss of life, particularly among the youth:

These are the kinds of tragedies that continue to rob our communities of their future. It’s painful to see our young people resort to dangerous, mining activities in their search for livelihoods. We must come together to properly regulate this cycle.

In light of these back-to-back tragedies, Hon.Seth Osei-Akoto has issued a strong call to action, advising communities and stakeholders to adopt a more proactive approach to safety and sustainable development.

Community leaders and unit committees are urged to monitor and regulate canoe operations to prevent further incidents.

We need to treat every river journey with the same seriousness as any other form of transport. Let’s train our canoe operators, and let’s not risk lives for convenience.

The MP assured constituents that plans are underway for him to visit both Achiase and Kasotie personally to commiserate with the bereaved families and assess the needs of survivors. He also pledged to work with NADMO, the District Assembly, and relevant agencies to deliver relief and long-term support.

“As your MP, I carry this burden with you.I will do everything within my power to ensure support reaches the families and that lasting measures are put in place to avoid future tragedies.”

Let these incidents mark a turning point. We can not afford to keep losing lives because of avoidable mistakes.Together, let us learn, let us heal, and let us act.
