The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man, identified only as Baker, for allegedly stabbing his friend, Kwadwo Bright, to death during a quarrel over a plastic chair at Ashanti New Town (Ashtown) in Kumasi.

According to police reports, the tragic incident occurred on September 4, 2025, when the two young men, who were known to be close friends, engaged in a heated argument at a local snooker center. Witnesses revealed that the misunderstanding appeared to have been resolved at the scene, but moments later, Baker allegedly launched a surprise attack, stabbing Bright in the neck with a sharp object.

Bright, aged 20, was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to the severity of his injuries.

Following the attack, Baker went into hiding, sparking a two-week police manhunt. Investigators traced him to the Kumasi Railway Market, where he was arrested on September 20, 2025. Police say the suspect’s father played a role in concealing him from authorities by hiding him in his shop and secretly providing him with food. The father has since been arrested for abetment of crime.

The deceased’s mother, Madam Georgina Yeboah, who rushed to the scene after hearing of the incident, described the loss as heartbreaking. “I heard people screaming about someone being stabbed and ran there, only to find my son lying in a pool of blood. Although the quarrel had reportedly been resolved, Baker still went ahead to attack him. This has left me devastated,” she told the media in tears.

The Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer confirmed that both Baker and his father are currently in custody and assisting with investigations. He assured the public that justice will be served and urged the community to remain calm as the case proceeds.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked public outrage in Kumasi, with residents expressing shock over the senseless killing and calling for swift prosecution to deter similar violent acts.

Police say investigations are still ongoing and the suspects will soon be arraigned before court.
