The Manso Tontokrom community in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region has been thrown into chaos following the arrival of more than 100 heavily armed soldiers allegedly deployed in support of Asanko Gold Mines.
Residents have accused the mining company of using military force to intimidate them and seize control of lands they claim have been in their families for generations. The latest military operation marks yet another chapter in a long-running land dispute between Asanko Gold Mines and the local community.
For years, Tontokrom residents have resisted attempts by the company to claim their farmlands, alleging that their livelihoods and heritage are under threat. The situation escalated sharply this weekend despite mediation efforts, including a high-level meeting between community representatives and the Ashanti Regional Minister just four days ago.
Speaking to reporters, Nyarko Isaac, a youth leader in the community, expressed anger and frustration over what he described as continued harassment by the mining company. He accused Asanko Mines of deploying military personnel to terrorize civilians, leading to severe injuries and even deaths in past confrontations. “There is no way the community will rest for Asanko Mining to take over our land,” Isaac declared, questioning the company’s refusal to heed the Ashanti Regional Minister’s assurance that the matter would be brought before the President for resolution.
Residents have vowed to resist what they see as oppressive tactics, warning that they will not allow their lands to be taken away without due process. The heightened tension has raised fears of potential clashes, with many in the community calling for immediate government intervention to prevent further violence.
The dispute over mining rights in Tontokrom reflects broader challenges facing Ghana’s mining sector, where large-scale operations frequently clash with traditional landowners and small-scale miners over resource control. Analysts say this case highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive policy that balances investment interests with the rights and welfare of local communities.
As of Saturday evening, the military presence in the town remained heavy, with residents on edge and demanding transparency and justice.
