Hon. Salifu Issaka Mobilizes Bekwai for Massive Sanitation Day Campaign

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bekwai, Hon. Salifu Issaka, has led a large-scale sanitation exercise across the municipality as part of the national Sanitation Day initiative, rallying community members, institutions, and stakeholders under the theme: “Let’s Clean, Green and Keep Bekwai Safe.”
The campaign, held over the weekend, drew an enthusiastic crowd including assembly members, youth volunteer groups, traditional leaders, officials of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and several civil society organizations. Together, they took to the streets, markets, and public spaces to sweep, desilt gutters, collect refuse, and beautify the surroundings in a spirited demonstration of civic responsibility.
Speaking in an interview with the media Hon. Salifu Issaka emphasized that sanitation must be a shared responsibility and not left in the hands of government alone.
“The fight against poor sanitation is not a one-man show. Government alone cannot do it all. We need every resident of Bekwai to get involved to make our community cleaner, greener, and safer,” he remarked passionately.
The MCE explained that the clean-up exercise is part of broader efforts by the municipal assembly to encourage a culture of environmental cleanliness, reduce communicable diseases, and enhance the general outlook of the town.
He also used the opportunity to educate the public on proper waste disposal practices and the harmful effects of indiscriminate littering, stressing the need for behavioural change among residents.
In a show of political support and unity for the initiative, the Ashanti Regional Second Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Sualihu Musah, joined the campaign and praised the proactive steps taken by the municipal authorities. He also applauded former President John Dramani Mahama for prioritizing sanitation and local development during his administration.
“We commend President Mahama for his unrelenting commitment to sanitation and development. The NDC remains focused on resetting this country and building a better future for all. We urge Ghanaians not to lose hope,” Mr. Musah said during the exercise.
He assured the people of Bekwai that the NDC will continue to support grassroots development initiatives and collaborate with all stakeholders to uplift communities and improve quality of life.
The exercise also received backing from various community-based organizations and religious groups, whose members actively participated in the cleaning activities, showcasing the unity and sense of purpose among residents.
Hon. Salifu Issaka concluded by stating that plans are underway to institutionalize the sanitation campaign as a monthly activity in the Bekwai Municipality. According to him, this will ensure that the municipality sets an example in environmental responsibility and continues to build a healthier, more attractive place for residents and visitors alike.
The clean-up campaign is seen as a strong step towards achieving a cleaner Bekwai and a healthier environment, in line with Ghana’s broader national sanitation agenda.
