Let Children Choose Their Path – Methodist Minister Tells Parents at Apraman M/A Graduation

The Ahodwo Circuit Minister of the Methodist Church Ghana, Very Rev. Dr. Ebenezer Yani, has urged parents to allow their children the freedom to choose career paths that align with their passions and natural abilities, rather than imposing their own expectations on them.
He made this passionate appeal during the 3rd Speech and Prize-Giving Day/Graduation ceremony of the Apraman M/A Basic School, located in the Nhyiaeso Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
Addressing parents, students, and community members gathered for the event, Very Rev. Dr. Yani emphasized the need for parents to play a more supportive and understanding role in their children’s academic and career journeys. He warned that forcing children into careers they are not passionate about can lead to frustration, poor performance, and a lack of fulfillment later in life.
“Parents must first identify and understand their children’s strengths and interests before deciding on schools or pushing them toward specific professions. Our children are not here to fulfill our dreams but to realize their own potential. We must support them to do just that,” he stated.
He encouraged parents to embrace open conversations with their children, learn more about modern career trends, and provide guidance that empowers rather than restricts.
The event also saw an inspiring address from Nana Adwoa Dokua, Chief Executive Officer of Beauty Queen Hotel at Santasi in Kumasi. She echoed the minister’s call and further emphasized the importance of investing in children’s education as the foundation for nurturing responsible and competent professionals in society.
“Education is not just about sending your child to school; it’s about ensuring they are motivated, well-equipped, and mentored to excel. As parents, we must not only pay school fees but also take active interest in their academic and career goals,” Nana Dokua stressed.
She pledged her continued support to Apraman M/A Basic School and urged other well-meaning individuals and institutions to come on board to support educational development in the community. According to her, a strong educational foundation remains the surest way to build a progressive and professional society.
The Headmaster of the school, Mr. Emmanuel Amoako, also used the occasion to advise the graduating Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates to stay focused and disciplined while awaiting their results. He cautioned them against indulging in social vices that could derail their academic progress and future goals.
“Discipline and good conduct after school are just as important as your grades. I urge you all to be cautious in your actions and continue to make your parents and teachers proud,” he said.
Mr. Amoako expressed profound appreciation to Nana Adwoa Dokua for her consistent support to the school over the years, noting that her contributions have played a key role in enhancing teaching and learning conditions.
The colourful ceremony featured poetry recitals, cultural performances, and the presentation of awards to outstanding students. It was well-attended by parents, teachers, local leaders, and invited guests who all shared in the celebration of academic excellence and personal development.
