Asuofua Queenmother and Assemblyman Cry for Help to Build Fire Station After Devastating Blaze

The Queenmother of the Asuofua Traditional Area in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Ahenkan Barnie, has passionately appealed for support to help construct a fire station for the community following a recent fire outbreak that destroyed a four-bedroom house.

Speaking in an interview with SILVER FM’s Sakwadaanyame, the Queenmother expressed grave concern over the rising cases of domestic fire outbreaks in the area, which she said have led to the loss of valuable properties due to delayed responses from fire stations located far away at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and Manhyia.

Nana Ahenkan Barnie revealed that the traditional council has already allocated a parcel of land for the proposed fire station and is now seeking the support of citizens of Asuofua living abroad, philanthropists, benevolent individuals, and the government to help bring the project to life.

“Anytime there is a fire outbreak, our people suffer. The fire service personnel come from KATH or Manhyia, and by the time they arrive, the damage is already done. We need a fire station here in Asuofua to protect lives and properties,” she lamented.

She emphasized that recurring fire incidents—especially during the dry season—have become a painful annual reality for the community. She stressed the need for urgent intervention to help address the problem and improve emergency response in the area.

Despite the challenges, the Queenmother acknowledged the developmental efforts by the government in the community, particularly the ongoing construction of the Abrepo-Asuofua-Barekese road, which she said has brought some relief to residents and commuters.

Meanwhile, the Assemblyman for Asuofua-Asamang Electoral Area, Hon. Michael Osei Kwaku, has also made a formal appeal to the Ashanti Regional Fire Commander to consider establishing a fire station in Asuofua.

According to him, the absence of a nearby fire post continues to endanger lives and property in the district capital and adjoining communities. He noted that forming rural fire volunteer squads would be more feasible with the establishment of a local fire station.

Hon. Osei Kwaku’s appeal followed a recent fire incident in Asuofua that gutted a four-bedroom house. He warned residents to be vigilant and cautious when using electrical appliances and gas cylinders in their homes.

“These fire incidents are becoming too frequent. The people of Asuofua need a permanent solution, and the establishment of a fire post will be a major step forward. We also intend to train community members as volunteer firefighters to support emergency responses,” he added.

The joint appeal from both the traditional authority and the local assembly has sparked conversations among residents and stakeholders, as they hope for swift action from government agencies and potential benefactors to help prevent future disasters.
