Asuofua Queenmother and Assembly Member Appeal for Fire Station as Fire Destroys Four-Bedroom House

The Queenmother of the Asuofua Traditional Area, Nana Ahenkan Barnie, and the Assemblyman for the Asuofua-Asamang Electoral Area, Hon. Michael Osei Kwaku, have jointly made a passionate appeal for the establishment of a fire station in the community following a recent fire outbreak that razed a four-bedroom house.
The fire incident, which occurred in the heart of the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region, once again highlighted the community’s long-standing vulnerability to fire disasters due to the absence of a nearby fire station. Emergency response teams had to travel from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and Manhyia fire stations — a situation which contributed to the delayed containment of the blaze and the complete destruction of the affected property.
In an interview with Silver FM’s Sakwadaanyame, Nana Ahenkan Barnie expressed deep concern over the increasing frequency of domestic fires in the community, lamenting the damage caused each year due to inadequate fire emergency services.
“This isn’t the first time we are witnessing such devastation. Fires have become a recurring nightmare for families in Asuofua. The community has no fire station, and every time there is an outbreak, we watch helplessly as properties go up in flames,” she said.
The Queenmother noted that the traditional council has already allocated land for the construction of a fire station and is now seeking support from the government, non-governmental organizations, philanthropists, and especially Asuofua natives living abroad.
“We are ready as a community. The land is available. What we need now is help—help from anyone who believes in protecting lives and property. This project is not just necessary; it is long overdue,” she emphasized.
She also acknowledged the government’s contribution to the area’s development, particularly the improvement of the Abrepo-Asuofua-Barekese road, which has enhanced movement and accessibility. However, she insisted that infrastructure without emergency services poses a serious threat to lives and livelihoods.
Hon. Michael Osei Kwaku, the Assemblyman for the area, echoed the Queenmother’s sentiments and called on the Ashanti Regional Fire Service to prioritize the establishment of a fire post in Asuofua.
According to him, the town serves not only its residents but also several surrounding communities, making the need for a localized fire service more critical than ever.
“We are tired of watching our people lose everything they have worked for because help comes too late,” Hon. Osei Kwaku said. “A fire station in Asuofua would drastically reduce response times and improve disaster management across the district.”
He added that a local station would also allow for the formation of rural fire volunteer squads, who could be trained to act quickly in emergencies before professional firefighters arrive.
The Assemblyman further cautioned residents to be extra cautious in their use of electrical gadgets and gas cylinders, which are among the common causes of fire outbreaks in the area.
The call by the two community leaders has sparked broad public interest, with many residents and concerned citizens lending their voices to the demand. The people of Asuofua are hopeful that the necessary authorities and development partners will respond to their urgent plea to help protect lives and properties in the area.
