Methodist Church Warns Sunday School Teachers: “Live the Word You Teach” — Superintendent Condemns Misconduct

In a passionate call for integrity and discipline among Christian educators, the Kumasi North Diocesan Sunday School Superintendent of the Methodist Church Ghana, Mr. Seth Atta Mensah Senior, has urged Sunday School teachers to practice what they preach and reflect the teachings of the Bible in their daily lives.

Addressing participants at the Maiden Sunday School Teachers’ Conference held at the Bethel Methodist Church in Kwadaso, Mr. Mensah condemned what he described as “unbecoming behavior” among some Sunday School leaders, warning that such conduct undermines the church’s mission of grooming children in righteousness.

He made reference to a recent incident at Pepease in the Sekyere Kumawu District, where two Sunday School teachers were reportedly involved in a physical confrontation, an event that he said brought shame to the image of the Church. “It is disheartening to hear that those entrusted with nurturing our children in the fear of God are fighting. This should never happen. If we are to lead children to Christ, then our lives must reflect His teachings,” Mr. Mensah cautioned.

He encouraged teachers to focus on delivering sound biblical instruction and to see themselves as role models whose lifestyles are constantly being watched by the young minds they train. “Sunday School teaching is not just about talking; it’s about living the word. Children learn more by example than by instruction. Let us live right, teach right, and lead right,” he urged.

The conference, which brought together dozens of teachers from various circuits under the Kumasi North Diocese, was aimed at enhancing the skills, character, and capacity of teachers to effectively carry out their spiritual duties. Topics treated included effective teaching methods, spiritual discipline, child psychology, and conflict resolution in ministry.

Many participants described the event as transformational and timely. Speaking to Sompa FM’s Bawah Baidoo, some of the teachers expressed deep gratitude and shared renewed commitment to their roles. “We are leaving this conference refreshed and ready to apply what we’ve learned. As the Bible says, ‘children are the heritage of the Lord,’ and we now know how to train them better,” said one teacher.

Another added, “We now understand that we are not only teachers but also examples. We pledge to uphold godliness in our service to these precious little ones.”

The Superintendent and other diocesan leaders called on all circuits to continuously invest in the training of Sunday School teachers and ensure that those selected to teach children are men and women of good moral standing.

As the Methodist Church Ghana continues its mission to build a Christ-centered generation, the emphasis remains clear: Sunday School teachers must not only teach the Word—they must live it.
