Clement Baako and Issifu Razak Remanded Again in GHC 1.2 Million Theft Case

The Prestea District Magistrate Court has once again remanded two suspects, Clement Baako and Issifu Razak, into prison custody over their alleged involvement in the theft of GHC 1.2 million belonging to Hon. Dr. Alex Yaw Baako, the Assembly Member for the Prestea Himan Electoral Area in the Western Region.

Clement Baako, who is the biological son of the complainant, and his accomplice Issifu Razak were initially remanded for three weeks following their arrest and court appearance. On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, they were brought back before the court, presided over by His Worship Iddi Adama, and remanded once more for an additional two weeks. The case has been adjourned to June 24, 2025, for further hearing and investigations.

The lead prosecutor, Chief Inspector Larweh, revealed during proceedings that both suspects had pleaded guilty to the charges, which involve the unlawful appropriation of a huge sum of money — equivalent to 12 billion old Ghana cedis — reportedly meant for community development projects and other operational purposes.

The court’s decision to extend the remand has been welcomed by many in the community, who view the crime as not only financial but deeply personal and symbolic of a major betrayal of public trust. The fact that the main suspect is the son of the victim has intensified the public’s interest and emotional investment in the case.

Security was tight at the Prestea Magistrate Court as large crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the accused persons. The suspects, appearing subdued, were quickly ushered into custody after the hearing.

Hon. Dr. Alex Yaw Baako, also known locally as Nana Aboroso, has not made any public statement since the incident broke, though he is said to be fully cooperating with police and legal authorities.

Residents in the Prestea Himan Electoral Area and across the Western Region have expressed both sympathy and outrage, with many hoping the case will serve as a wake-up call about accountability and integrity — even within families of public servants.

As investigations continue, the community awaits the court’s next steps on June 24, with calls for justice to prevail without fear or favor.
