Prof Addai-Mensah Exits KATH After Historic Leadership; New CEO Set to Take Over Next Week

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, will officially conclude his tenure by next week after a highly transformative period at the helm of the institution.

The decision for Prof Addai-Mensah to step down was finalized today after a meeting with the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. Sources close to the meeting confirmed to this reporter that the Health Minister personally expressed gratitude to the outgoing CEO for his exemplary leadership, dedication, and contribution towards modernizing KATH.

The Minister, according to the source, also paid personal tribute to Prof Addai-Mensah, thanking him for the excellent medical attention he received at KATH following his serious accident in 2024.

Confirmation and Reaction
Speaking to this reporter shortly after the meeting, Prof Addai-Mensah confirmed his departure and revealed that the government has already appointed a successor who would soon assume office.

Describing the discussion with the Health Minister as “cordial and fruitful,” Prof Addai-Mensah thanked former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for the confidence they reposed in him by offering him the opportunity to lead KATH for two terms.

He extended his best wishes to the incoming CEO and called on the hospital’s management and staff to accord the new leadership the same level of support and collaboration to sustain the growth and transformation of KATH.

Remarkable Legacy
Appointed in November 2022, Prof Addai-Mensah is credited with leading one of the most ambitious modernization efforts in the hospital’s history.

His signature initiative, the Hospital Emergency and Key Area Project (HEKAP), aimed at transforming KATH into a 21st-century healthcare facility, won widespread admiration.

Under his leadership, the hospital expanded its dialysis capacity significantly — from just two machines in 2022 to approximately 20 machines by 2025 — vastly improving access to renal healthcare.

In addition, Prof Addai-Mensah oversaw major retooling of various departments, initiated comprehensive staff and management orientation programs, and spearheaded the construction of a new pharmaceutical block designed to enhance drug supply and storage systems at KATH.

Thanks to his dynamism, KATH witnessed a renewed sense of professionalism, efficiency, and a patient-centered approach to healthcare delivery.

Looking Ahead
Although Prof Addai-Mensah had two years remaining on his contract, he leaves office having etched his name in the annals of KATH as a leader who made a real difference.

The Ministry of Health is expected to officially announce his successor in the coming days as preparations are finalized for the formal handover.
