A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Irene Naa Torshie Addo, has extended a generous hand of support to victims of the recent devastating fire outbreak at Adum-Blue Light in Kumasi by donating an amount of GH¢100,000.
The donation, which was made possible through funding support from the ReneAddo Foundation, was officially presented to the leadership of the affected traders during her visit to the site on Friday, May 2, 2025.
Naa Torshie was accompanied by Hon. Collins Ntim, a former Deputy Minister for Local Government, Madam Georgina Konadu Adepa Kusi, CEO of Georgia Hotel, as well as executives from the Subin Constituency and the Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party. Their presence was a show of solidarity and empathy towards the victims who have been left reeling from the tragedy.
Speaking during the presentation, Naa Torshie Addo expressed profound sympathy on behalf of the NPP to all traders who lost their wares and livelihoods in the unfortunate incident. She emphasized that the party’s concern transcends political affiliations, noting that the support being extended is purely humanitarian, aimed at helping the affected traders rebuild their lives.
She highlighted that the donations made by various members of the NPP to the victims are a reflection of the party’s deep love and commitment to the wellbeing of the Ghanaian people, particularly those in difficult times.
A known philanthropist and legal practitioner, Naa Torshie pledged that the GH¢100,000 cash donation would not be her last contribution to the recovery efforts. She assured the victims of her continued support in various forms to help them recover and re-establish their businesses.
In addition to the financial assistance, Naa Torshie Addo announced plans to organize educational sessions for the traders. She stressed the importance of business insurance as a critical safety net for traders and promised to return to the area to provide education on insurance options suitable for small and medium-scale businesses.
Furthermore, she committed to spearheading sensitization programs on electrical safety practices in public trading spaces. She cautioned against the rampant use of unauthorized and indiscriminate wiring extensions, which often lead to electrical faults, circuit overloads, and fire outbreaks.
Naa Torshie emphasized that preventing such disasters in the future requires both personal responsibility and collective action, urging the traders to prioritize safety in their businesses.
The affected traders expressed immense gratitude for the gesture and the continuous concern shown by Naa Torshie and the New Patriotic Party leadership. Many described the donation as timely and critical to their efforts to restart their businesses after suffering significant losses.
The Adum-Blue Light fire disaster, which occurred late last month, razed down several shops, causing millions of Ghana cedis worth of goods and properties to be destroyed. Since the incident, there has been a massive outpouring of support from various political figures, corporate bodies, and benevolent individuals towards the affected traders.
Naa Torshie’s intervention is thus seen as a major boost to the rebuilding efforts and a beacon of hope for the victims as they navigate the difficult path to recovery.
