Traders at Kejetia Market in Kumasi are calling on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, to urgently appoint a new board of directors to replace the current leadership, citing mismanagement and a lack of innovation as key reasons for the market’s decline.
The Alliance for Change, a group of concerned traders, is advocating for a total overhaul of the market’s leadership, arguing that only fresh and dynamic leadership can restore the market to its former glory. They are calling for the removal of the old board, whose leadership they claim has resulted in financial instability and a failure to meet the needs of traders.
“The current state of the market is unacceptable. Traders are struggling due to ineffective management, and the market is not generating the revenue it could. We need fresh leadership that is committed to turning things around,” said Anastasia Bonsu, spokesperson for the group.
The traders emphasize that the appointment of new board members is critical for the future of Kejetia Market. They believe that the current leadership’s inability to address key issues, including market maintenance, revenue generation, and trader welfare, has resulted in a significant loss of confidence among traders.
While the group has expressed respect for Amoamahene Nana Agyenim Boateng, who represented the Asantehene on the previous board, they argue that his performance fell short of expectations, and they are advocating for a completely new leadership team.
“We acknowledge the past contributions of Amoamahene, but his tenure did not bring the necessary changes to improve the market. We are calling for fresh leadership that can think creatively and introduce effective solutions,” Ms. Bonsu explained.
The Alliance for Change strongly believes that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has a wealth of talented and experienced chiefs and administrators who can help lead the market toward success. They are confident that new leadership will bring the much-needed innovation and strategic thinking required to resolve the market’s challenges.
“Kejetia Market is the lifeblood of Kumasi’s economy, but it needs visionary leaders who can harness its potential. We are asking Otumfuo to bring in creative, forward-thinking individuals who can breathe new life into the market,” the group emphasized.
The traders have called for swift action from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in appointing new leadership to ensure that Kejetia Market can thrive once again. They are hopeful that the Asantehene will take their concerns seriously and act decisively to secure a brighter future for the market and its traders.
