The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, has donated 25 bags of rice as a personal gift to inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons ahead of the Easter festivities.
The gift follows his visit with some management members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Monday to discuss with the prison leadership the possibility of using inmates for sanitation purposes.
Presenting the bags of rice to Chief Superintendent Kofi Takyi, the second-in-command of Kumasi Prisons, Ofori-Agyeman Boadi said he realized during his previous visit that inmates hadn’t eaten rice in some time, prompting his decision to gift bags of rice for Easter Monday.
He added that his wife plans to offer gallons of oil and tins of tomatoes to complement his effort, enabling the inmates to enjoy their meal.
He emphasized that prison is not meant to punish inmates but for reformation purposes and urged well-meaning and affluent individuals to support the government in caring for inmates.
Ofori-Agyeman Boadi also highlighted the need to shape public perception about people in prisons, noting that many inmates are there due to accidents and misfortunes.
