The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has confirmed that four armed robbery suspects have been gunned down in a shootout with police officers during a targeted operation.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Piasa Darkwa, who serves as the Deputy Crime Officer, the suspects had earlier attacked a rural bank in the area, leaving four persons injured and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.
Following the bank robbery, the gang reportedly turned their attention to residents, seizing mobile phones, cash, and other valuables. They later mounted an illegal blockade between Akokeri and Anwiankwan, where they robbed commuters of their belongings, including laptops and other electronics.
Briefing the media on Monday, April 14, 2025, ASP Darkwa disclosed that intelligence gathered by the police indicated the suspects were planning another coordinated robbery in Sanfo Aduam on Thursday.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the police launched an operation to apprehend the suspects. However, the robbers opened fire, leading to a fierce gun battle. All four suspects were killed during the exchange.
Weapons retrieved at the scene included an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action shotgun, and 17 rounds of live ammunition.
ASP Darkwa assured the public of the police’s continued commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region. He noted that intensified surveillance and targeted operations will be sustained to prevent further criminal activity.
“The Police Service remains resolute in the fight against armed robbery and will do everything possible to protect lives and property across the Ashanti South Region,” he stated.
