Kejetia Petty Traders Vow Full Support for Future Clean-Up Exercises in Kumasi

The Kejetia Petty Traders Association has pledged its unwavering support for all future clean-up exercises in the Kumasi Metropolis, as part of efforts to promote environmental sanitation and public health.

The assurance was given by the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Emmanuel Kwateng, during the Ashanti Fest Mega Clean-Up Exercise held over the weekend in the heart of Kumasi. The event, which was organized as part of activities marking the Ashanti Fest celebration, saw an impressive turnout of stakeholders who collaborated to improve sanitation in the city.

Addressing participants and the media, Mr. Kwateng emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean and hygienic environment, especially in market areas where hundreds of people interact daily. He noted that good sanitation not only prevents diseases but also enhances business operations by making the markets more attractive to customers.

“We are ever ready to give our full support to any clean-up exercise in Kumasi,” Mr. Kwateng affirmed. “As traders, we believe that a clean environment promotes good health and better business. Cleanliness is next to godliness, and it is our social responsibility to help keep the city clean.”

Mr. Kwateng further called on other market associations across the metropolis to emulate the example of the Kejetia traders and join hands with city authorities to uphold cleanliness as a shared civic duty.

The Ashanti Fest Mega Clean-Up Exercise was spearheaded by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council in collaboration with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and supported by waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited. The initiative brought together a wide range of participants including assembly members, traders, Zoomlion personnel, and residents, all working together to clean the streets, desilt gutters, and properly dispose of refuse.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who actively participated in the clean-up, lauded the high level of community participation and expressed appreciation to the Kejetia Petty Traders for their enthusiastic involvement. He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving sanitation in Kumasi and other parts of the region, while urging all residents to adopt clean-up exercises as a regular practice.

“This is not just about one day of activity. We want to instill a sense of responsibility in every citizen to keep their environment clean. The level of participation today gives me hope that we can achieve a cleaner Kumasi if we continue on this path,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.

Officials of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly also expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the level of work done during the exercise. The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Samuel Pyne, noted that the assembly would soon roll out a regular schedule for monthly clean-up activities in various markets and communities within the metropolis.

He called on the public to support these efforts and refrain from littering and improper disposal of waste, which he described as one of the key challenges to urban cleanliness.

The Ashanti Fest celebration, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Ashanti Region, has this year placed a strong emphasis on community service and civic responsibility, with sanitation playing a central role.

Authorities hope that the momentum generated by the Kejetia traders and other participants will inspire more community-led clean-up efforts and a sustained culture of cleanliness across the city in the months ahead.
