A 37-year-old man riding a bicycle was knocked down by a speeding, unlicensed vehicle this morning at the Sofoline South Junction, near the Anglican Church and Anglican School, raising serious concerns about road safety in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that after hitting the cyclist, the driver immediately fled the scene, leaving the victim on the ground. This swift departure has heightened concerns about accountability in such incidents.
Joseph Amoateng, a reporter for Oyerepa FM/TV, visited the scene and spoke to several locals, including Sofo Kwame, an eyewitness. Kwame pointed to the overgrowth of bushy weeds in the middle of the highway as a major factor contributing to frequent accidents at this junction. He emphasized that these weeds obstruct visibility, leaving both drivers and cyclists with limited time to react to potential hazards. Kwame called on the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the Highway Authority to take immediate action by clearing the weeds to improve road safety.
Residents and commuters also expressed concerns about the lack of adequate infrastructure to ensure pedestrian safety, especially for schoolchildren who frequently cross the road. Some witnesses suggested the installation of traffic lights at the busy junction to better regulate traffic and provide safer crossings.
The incident has sparked a wider debate on the need for road safety improvements in the area. Many are urging local authorities to act swiftly to prevent future accidents and ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. Calls for better traffic regulation, increased surveillance, and road maintenance are growing louder, as the community hopes for lasting change.
The victim, whose condition is not immediately clear, was reportedly rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. However, details about his injuries remain scarce at the time of writing.
As investigations continue, the community remains hopeful that authorities will address the growing concerns and take the necessary actions to resolve the safety issues at the Sofoline South Junction.
