Work on Saglemi Housing Project to Resume Soon – Works & Housing Minister Assures

The long-abandoned Saglemi Affordable Housing Project is set for revival as the government prepares to deploy contractors back to the site, Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has announced.

Speaking during a working visit to housing projects at Shai Hills and Ningo Prampram, Mr. Adjei reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s housing deficit by ensuring that stalled projects are completed.

“We know the Saglemi housing project, among others, has stalled halfway. Since taking office, I have been engaging key stakeholders, and very soon, we will move to the site and resume work,” he assured.

The Saglemi Housing Project: A Long-Delayed Promise

Initiated in 2012 under President John Dramani Mahama, the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project was designed to deliver 5,000 housing units for low- and middle-income earners. However, after an estimated $200 million had been invested, only 1,500 units were partially completed before the project was halted in 2017.

The delay was due to allegations of financial mismanagement, leading to lawsuits against former Works and Housing Minister Collins Dauda. The legal proceedings, which had dragged on for eight years, were recently discontinued by the current Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, clearing the way for the project to move forward.

Ensuring Project Completion and Accountability

Mr. Adjei stressed that the government would put measures in place to prevent future project stalls, as they often lead to huge financial losses and unfinished developments.

“We must ensure that no project is left halfway. If we start something, we should be able to finish it. That is the direction this government is taking,” he emphasized.

He also urged contractors to adhere to project timelines, stating that delays must be avoided to ensure efficient delivery of housing projects.

“Some projects are behind schedule, while others are on track. Going forward, we want all contractors to meet their deadlines. I will be engaging them to ensure that happens,” he added.

Government’s Commitment to Coastal Protection

Beyond housing, the Minister highlighted the government’s dedication to protecting coastal communities, revealing plans to fast-track alternative funding for sea defence projects in Axim, Cape Coast, Dansoman, and Dixcove.

“We are committed to safeguarding lives and property along the coast. Securing funding for these projects is a priority, and we will expedite the process to ensure their completion,” he noted.

The revival of the Saglemi Housing Project is expected to bring relief to thousands of Ghanaians in need of affordable housing, marking a renewed commitment to nationwide infrastructure development.
