A section of elected assembly members in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region has strongly condemned the District Coordinating Director Mr Opoku Ababio Nana for allegedly bypassing them in the swearing-in of government appointees. The aggrieved members say the move is a complete disregard for due process and undermines their authority as elected representatives.
According to them, the inauguration of both elected and appointed assembly members must follow the procedures outlined in the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). However, they claim that the Coordinating Director went ahead to swear in government appointees without their involvement, describing it as unfair and unacceptable.
Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved members, Hon. Peter Awereh said the act not only disrespects elected assembly members but also erodes trust in the assembly’s operations.
“We find it extremely disrespectful that the Coordinating Director ignored the protocols that govern our work. The inauguration of assembly members is not a personal decision but a well-structured process outlined by law. We will not tolerate such an abuse of power,” he stated.
Hon. Awereh further issued a strong warning that if such incidents continue, they will resist any attempt to impose decisions on them.
“We want to send a clear message—this should never happen again. If it does, we will make the assembly ungovernable for any new District Chief Executive (DCE) appointed under President John Dramani Mahama,” he cautioned.
Other aggrieved assembly members also voiced their frustration, insisting that their constitutional rights must be respected at all times.
The controversy has sparked debate among local governance stakeholders, with calls for the proper adherence to legal procedures to avoid future conflicts.
