The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) paid a courtesy visit to Parliament today to engage with the party’s Minority Caucus, commending them for their steadfastness and diligence in conducting parliamentary business.
The visit comes in the wake of the recent controversial suspension of three NPP Members of Parliament by the Speaker, a move the party has described as “autocratic” and an attempt to intimidate the Minority.
During the meeting, the NPP leadership reaffirmed its unwavering support for the caucus, urging them to remain resilient in the face of what they termed as the Speaker’s “bullying tendencies” and the pressure from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority.
“We are here to let you know that the party stands firmly behind you. Do not be deterred by the tactics of the Majority or the Speaker’s unilateral decisions. Your duty is to defend due process, consensus building, and the democratic principles of this House,” an NPP executive stated during the meeting.
In response, the Minority Caucus assured the party leadership of their commitment to upholding parliamentary procedures and resisting any attempts to sideline them in legislative deliberations.
“Come rain or shine, we will insist on due process, and we will not be pushovers. We will fight for fairness and ensure that every decision in this House is made in accordance with the rules of Parliament,” a spokesperson for the caucus assured.
The meeting underscores growing tensions in the House, especially as the Speaker’s handling of parliamentary affairs continues to draw criticism from the NPP. With the party leadership throwing its full weight behind the Minority, the political temperature in Parliament is expected to remain high in the coming days.
Meanwhile, analysts believe the Speaker’s recent decisions could further deepen the division between the two major parties, potentially affecting the smooth operation of legislative business.
As the Minority gears up for the parliamentary sessions ahead, all eyes will be on the House to see how these developments unfold.
