3-Year-Old Found Dead at Galamsey Site at Manso Atobease: Police Launch Investigation

A tragic incident unfolded in the Atobease electoral area of the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region, where a three-year-old boy, identified as Kofi, was found dead at a Galamsey site on Friday morning around 5 a.m.

The young boy had gone missing earlier that day, prompting a public announcement over the local information center asking for assistance in locating him. Sadly, his body was later discovered at a nearby illegal mining site, which has raised concerns about the safety risks posed by such operations in the area.

Local authorities, including the Ghana Police Service from the Esuonwunu Police Station, have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of death. The body of the deceased has been transferred to Nkawie Government Hospital for an autopsy as part of the ongoing probe.

Hon. Samuel Yeboah, the Assembly Member for the area, expressed his sorrow on behalf of the grieving family and urged the community to take immediate steps to ensure such incidents do not occur again. He made a public appeal to mining operators in the region, stressing the importance of prioritizing land reclamation and safety measures on mining sites. Hon. Yeboah pointed out that many children in the area may unknowingly wander into these hazardous zones, making it crucial for operators to restore the land to a safer state after mining activities.

The death of Kofi has shaken the community, which is known for both farming and illegal mining activities, and has sparked a renewed discussion on the dangers of unregulated mining. Local leaders are calling for greater oversight and stricter safety regulations to prevent further tragedies and to ensure the safety of all residents, especially young children.
