Three schools—Serwaa Nyarko Senior High School (SHS), T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS (T.I. Amass), and Prince of Peace SHS—have secured spots in the upcoming national inter-SHS HIV/AIDS Quiz championship following impressive performances in the Ashanti Regional Championship. The quiz, which saw participation from 12 schools, aims to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS pandemic among the youth.
The metropolitan contest included two preliminary rounds, with the final stage determining the top three schools to represent the Kumasi Metro in subsequent competitions. While the date for the national quiz is yet to be announced, the three qualifying schools are already gearing up for the competition.
In a thrilling final, Serwaa Nyarko SHS and T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS ended in a tie with 23 points each, while Prince of Peace SHS triumphed over Kumasi Wesley Girls SHS after a tense tiebreaker question, with both schools initially tied at 21 points. The contest was closely contested, showcasing the students’ extensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS.
St. Hubert’s Seminary SHS finished in fourth place with 18 points, followed by Kumasi Secondary Technical School with 14 points and Kumasi Anglican Secondary School, which placed sixth with 10 points. Other participating schools included Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS, Armed Forces SHS, Islamic SHS, Kumasi Senior High School, Kumasi Girls SHS, and JA Kufuor SHS.
Before the contest commenced, key figures from the Ghana AIDS Commission emphasized the importance of educating the youth on HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness. Felicia Owusu Agyemang, Deputy Coordinating Director and Metro Focal Person on HIV/AIDS, and Olivia Graham, Regional Technical Officer of the Ghana AIDS Commission, both spoke about the need to expand students’ knowledge of the disease, highlighting the role of young people in combating the pandemic. They stressed that the quiz would serve as both an educational exercise and a platform to empower students to share their newfound knowledge with others in their communities.
They were full of praise for Hon. Samuel Pyne, Kumasi Mayor for his unwavering support towards the competition.
The metro-level competition, which showcased both academic rigor and the students’ commitment to social responsibility, concluded with high hopes for the next stage of the quiz, where the best minds in HIV/AIDS education will come together in the national competition.
