The Old Tafo Constituency of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti region is demanding an unqualify apology from one Frederick Frank Dankwah, Deputy Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Constituency a defamatory remarks made in a public statement on Boss FM on Wednesday the 14th of August 2024 or face the law Court.
Abubakar Sadiq, the constituency secretary of the NDC at a press conference stated that, the NPP constituency deputy secretary accused their Parliamentary Candidate Sahmudeen Mohammed Kamil esq. of dishonesty and propagated baseless allegations, Tarnishing his reputation and credibility.
According to him, the deputy secretary accused the NDC Parliamentary Candidate of misleading constituents in the Ahenvronum Electoral Area by falsely claiming that, Dr Mahammud Bawumia the flagbearer of the NPP endorse his candidacy based solely on religious affiliation.
NDC secretary stated that, the NPP deputy secretary indicated that, the NDC PC suggested that, because Dr Mahammud Bawumia and him the NDC PC are both Muslims he would be better positioned to work with him and for that matter, the constituents should support his candidacy, the accusations the NDC feels are unequivocally false and malicious.
He noted that, the Old Tafo Constituency of the NDC is always committed to truthfulness throughout their campaign and tenure and consistently upheld honesty and integrity in their engagement with constituents and has been centered on policy discussions, Community development and inclusive representation devoid of religious or divisive rhetoric.
He expressed the view that, the NPP constituency deputy secretary statement is not just an attack on their candidate personal integrity, but also an attack on the very fabric of our democratic process, by attempting to inject religious considerations into political competition.
NDC constituency secretary said the actions of the NPP constituency deputy secretary is undermining the values of farness, tolerance and respect that should underpin our politics.
He stressed that, should the deputy secretary fail to retract the defamatory statements and issue a formal apology within a week after the press conference, they at the NDC at Old Tafo reserve the right to pursue legal recourse to protect their candidate reputation and seek appropriate remedies under the law.
The NDC constituency secretary call on all political actors regardless of party affiliation to rise above petty and divisive tactics and focus on the real issues that affect the lives of the people.
He urged to engage in constructive dialogue, debate policies and propose solutions that would bring the development and progress the communities desperately need.
