The life of Kumasi-based journalist Kwabena Akuako Kwarteng is facing death threat for his request to Ghana Parliament to end the discussion on the “unnecessary LGBTQ+ Bill and do something necessary”.
The journalist, who is the host of Kessben FM’s morning show ‘Maakye’, in his presentation, said Parliaments should focus on finding ways to create jobs for the people than wasting time on the bill.
Following his remarks, Kwabena Akuako Kwarteng who was the former Assembly Member for Manso Mem Electoral Area, Again two term presiding member for the Amansie South District Assembly in the Ashanti region said he has started receiving death threats from unknown individuals.
“Last week Friday, February 9, I was attacked by some people at Fante New Town when I was buying food. In an attempt to beat me after getting into my car, they smashed the car’s door. They asked me why I am against the LGBTQ+ Bill, and warned me to stop talking against the bill if I love my life,” he told Otec News reporter Simon Opoku Afriyie.
“As I speak to you now, I have been receiving several death threats on my mobile phone by unknown people. I can no longer sleep in my house for the safety of my life. I have also reported the matter to the Police and they have started an investigation,” he added.
Asked if the threats will influence his thoughts on the LGBTQ+ Bill, he responded “We live in a democratic country, I have the freedom to express my views on issues and that will not shake him”.
“I still believe that the Parliament ought to end discussion on the bill, they should respect the rights of the individuals who chosen that path. Those who participate in the activities of the LGBTQ+ should be left alone,” Kwabena Akuako Kwarteng stated.
Kwabena Akuako Kwarteng posited that “even the parliamentarians are divided on the issue, some are against the passing of the bill. Though am a journalist and Christian, I also have my opinion just like some of the lawmakers so they should respect my opinion.”
“This is not the time of wasting time deliberating on issues that affect people’s rights and freedom when the masses are suffering. The parliamentarians should focus on finding ways to create jobs for the development of the country,” he concluded.
