Kejetia traders to protest against KMA over leaky market roof, poor drainage system

Traders at the New Kumasi Kejetia Market have threatened to demonstrate against the management of the market and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) if they fail to repair the leaking roofs and correct the poor drainage system at the facility.

According to the traders, anytime it rains, their goods are destroyed due to the leaking roof of the structure.

The traders have, therefore, called on the authorities to ensure that the roofs are properly fixed and the drainage system worked on to avoid flooding.

The traders listed non-availability of access routes to some parts of the market, looming health risks due to excessive fumes from vehicles, and exorbitant electricity bills among other concerns as the challenges confronting their business operations.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kumasi on Wednesday, 24 March 2021, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the traders, Nana Akwasi Prempeh, gave the KMA a two-week ultimatum to address all of their concerns.

“We’re telling the management to immediately come to the aid of the traders and restore the flooding issue. The flooding issue must be taken seriously. The management is being given two weeks to make sure all aspects of flooding stop henceforth.”

“When an edifice of this nature is put up, it is expected that every aspect of it with regards to the drainage system will be corrected. As I’m speaking to you now, every drain in this Kejetia edifice is choked. This is the more reason why you always see flooding in Kejetia here…,” the PRO for the traders said.
