Some teachers in public basic schools in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region have defiled the strike directive by their unions and attended school today.
The teacher unions have declared a strike to demand the withdrawal of the appointment of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Eric Nkansah.
The strike which was declared last Friday took effect today but most teachers defiled the directive to attend school.
During a visit to the K.O Methodist Cluster of Schools, almost all the teachers were present and teaching.
The situation was different at the Konadu Yiadom JHS in Ashtown where only two teachers attended school but at its Primary School, the majority of teachers were present.
At St. Joseph R/C Basic School and St. Louis Demonstration JHS, as well as the Roman Catholic Girls’ Demonstration JHS, almost all the teachers were present and teaching.
The Ashtown Local Chairman for the Ghana National Association of Teachers who doubles as a teacher at K.O Methodist Cluster of Schools, Mr. Samuel Arhin told Class News’ Elisha Adarkwah that the communication on the strike did not come early.
He said most of the teachers had already prepared to come to school and for that reason, they could not have been asked to go back home.
Mr. Arhin, therefore, called on the government to resolve their concerns by removing the Director-General from his post and appoint someone more deserving.
The teachers said Dr Nkansah is a banker and not a teacher and, therefore, are unhappy he has been appointed to lead them.
