I Am Aware That Some Teacher Unions Have Declared Strike – President Acknowledges

The President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo has acknowledged that he is fully aware of the current strike that has been declared by the Teacher Union.

Speaking on the Eid-Ul-Adha celebration ground on Saturday, the President appealed to all teachers on strike to resume their normal duties whiles the Government engages in negotiations to address their needs.

“I am aware that some teacher unions have declared a strike in pursuit of a twenty per cent Cost of Living Allowance. I am happy that yesterday, the teachers were joined by other members of the organised labour under the Trades Union Congress to sit down with the government led by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and the Minister for Education to begin negotiations on this matter,” he said.

The teachers called on the strike after their request from the Government proved futile. The teachers had demanded a 20% cost of living allowance from the government to cushion themselves against the hardships prevailing in the country.

Speaking further on the Eid ground, the President bemoaned the negative impact of the strike on students, especially those in their final year.

According to him, he lamented that the final year students are close to writing their final exams, henceforth the strike might affect their performance in the upcoming tests.
