43-year-old man dies while dredging well in Kwara

The incident occurred while Murtala was working as a well digger behind Global Primary and Secondary School in the Bayi Community area of Egbejila

On Tuesday, tragedy struck in the Egbejila area of Ilorin, located in the Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, as a 43-year-old man lost his life after falling into a well.

The victim, identified as Abdulqadir Murtala, was working as a well digger in the vicinity behind Global Primary and Secondary School in the Bayi Community, Egbejila area. Sadly, he met his demise in the well.

The Kwara State Fire Service had to intervene to retrieve his lifeless body from the well. Murtala hailed from a compound opposite the Oniguguru compound in the Oko-Erin area of Ilorin.

The spokesman for the fire service, Hassan Adekunle, in a statement, said, “The incident occurred this (Tuesday) morning around 10.30am and the Brigade was summoned through a telephone call by one Mr David, a resident of the area.

“However, firemen were able to recover the dead body from the well and later handed it over to one Mr Mohammed Abdulwasiu, a family member of the deceased.

“According to the report, the victim went to re-dredge a well and during the process of dredging, one of his legs slipped off the ground and he eventually tumbled into the well.”

Adekunle said the Director, Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed sadness over the incident and urged the public to be more careful in their day-to-day activities.
