The Government’s National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) has been officially launched in the Afigya Kwabre North District, marking a significant milestone in efforts to equip young people with employable vocational skills and promote sustainable livelihoods within the district.
The initiative forms part of the Government of Ghana’s broader strategy to strengthen technical and vocational education while addressing the persistent challenge of youth unemployment across the country. Currently in its pilot phase, the programme will support 30 apprentices who will undergo intensive hands-on training under the supervision of six government-sponsored master craftsmen.
At a brief but impactful launch ceremony, all registered beneficiaries were presented with essential tools and equipment relevant to their respective trades. The provision of the tools is intended to facilitate practical training and ensure that apprentices acquire the necessary technical competencies required to become skilled professionals in their chosen fields.
Speaking at the event, the District Chief Executive for the Afigya Kwabre North District, Emmanuel Jackson Agumah, emphasized the importance of discipline, commitment, and quality training in the success of the programme.
He stressed that the government expects trainers to strictly comply with the terms of their contractual obligations by delivering effective, practical, and high-quality instruction to the apprentices. According to him, the programme represents a valuable opportunity for young people in the district to acquire meaningful skills that will enable them to become economically independent and contribute to national development.
Hon. Agumah further assured participants that the programme would be closely monitored and supervised by the appropriate authorities to ensure that both trainers and apprentices adhere to the expected standards and achieve the intended outcomes.
He also encouraged the beneficiaries to demonstrate seriousness and dedication throughout the training period, reminding them that the skills they acquire would play a crucial role in shaping their future careers and improving their livelihoods.
Some of the apprentices who spoke during the programme expressed profound gratitude to the Government and the District Assembly for the opportunity. They pledged to remain committed to their training and make full use of the tools and knowledge being provided to them.
The National Apprenticeship Programme is widely seen as a transformative intervention aimed at expanding access to vocational training, empowering the youth with practical skills, and creating pathways for sustainable employment in communities across Ghana. As the programme progresses in the district, stakeholders remain optimistic that it will significantly enhance skills development and economic opportunities for young people in the area.
