25 Agona Swedru SHS Final-Year Students Suspended Over Same-Sex Proposal Clash
A disturbing altercation at the Agona Swedru Senior High School has resulted in the suspension of 25 final-year students following a violent confrontation allegedly sparked by a same-sex relationship proposal.

The incident, which has shocked many in the school community, reportedly began when one male student expressed romantic interest in a fellow male student. The latter rejected the proposal but later discussed the issue with some of his friends. These friends, according to school authorities, advised him to feign interest and arrange to meet the proposing student under false pretenses.
What followed, however, was a planned ambush. The student who had initially declined the romantic proposal allegedly lured the other student into a trap where he was attacked by a group of students believed to be his friends.
In what appeared to be retaliation, the assaulted student informed his dormitory mates, which sparked a reprisal attack. The situation quickly escalated as more students got involved, leading to a chaotic scene on campus that prompted urgent intervention by school authorities.
The headmistress of the school, Mrs. Golda Esi Andam, in an interview with Onua News, confirmed the series of events and described the conduct of the students as unacceptable. She said the school promptly initiated an internal investigation and ensured that all implicated students were given a fair hearing before disciplinary action was taken.
“We followed due process,” Mrs. Andam said. “All the students involved in the violence were invited to explain their side of the story before a disciplinary committee. After thorough deliberations, we decided on suspension.”
As part of the disciplinary measures, the affected students—who are in their final year—will be allowed to sit for their final exams under strict supervision and only in the presence of their parents or guardians.
“These students will write their final exams under the escort of their parents,” the headmistress stated firmly. “They have now realised that the Ghana Education Service (GES) does not joke with its code of conduct.”
She clarified that the suspension is not a termination of their academic rights but rather a stern warning to reinforce discipline within the school environment. Mrs. Andam emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum and urged students to strictly adhere to school rules and avoid any behavior that may compromise the safety and reputation of the institution.
The Ghana Education Service is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but education stakeholders have begun calling for increased counselling and awareness creation in schools to address emerging social issues among students.
The incident has triggered conversations both on social and traditional media about student conduct, same-sex issues in schools, and the importance of handling sensitive matters with discretion and maturity.
