Discoloured Lips: What causes this condition? (MUST READ)

Human lips, according to health experts, vary in shape, size and colour.

This is often attributed to things such as natural skin tone, the level of sun exposure and overall health.

According to Medical-News-Today, a person can experience lip-discoloration after consuming things that contain pigments, such as berries, beets and wine.

Lip-discoloration, or pink lips, can also be the result of sun damage, nutritional deficiencies, or an underlying medical condition.

According to the publication, there are medical reasons for someone to have pink lips.

These causes, according to the publication, include:

Iron deficiency anaemia

Iron deficiency anaemia occurs when a person does not have enough iron in their body. The symptoms of anaemia vary, depending on the severity. People who have mild iron deficiency anaemia may not experience any symptoms at all or can also experience pink lip decolourisation.

Hemochromatosis

When a person has an excess of iron in the body, it can cause hemochromatosis. One symptom of hemochromatosis is skin hyperpigmentation. This may result in discolouration of the lips also known as pink lips.

Sun exposure

Dark, pink and crusty bumps on your lips are called actinic keratosis, or sunspots and may develop due to sun exposure. They can appear on areas of the skin, including the lips, face, back, chest and arms. Sunspots vary in size and colour, ranging from light-tan to dark-red.

Certain medications

Some people may experience hyperpigmentation and other skin-changes as a side-effect of certain medications. Some of these medications include cytotoxic drugs, which doctors use to treat cancer, tetracyclines, which doctors use to treat bacterial infections and any medicine that contain heavy metals.

Allergies

Pink, inflamed or dry lips may occur as a result of an allergic reaction to ingredients present in cosmetics and oral hygiene products. This may be caused by lipstick, leather and products containing fragrances, preservatives, or metals.
