BREAKING: PURC INCREASES Electricity and Water prices

The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) has increased the end user price of electricity and water in the country.

The PURC at a press conference in Accra said it has after a deliberation decided to increase end-user price of electricity by 27.15% and that of water by 21.55%.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in May 2022 requested an increase in water tariff of 334 per cent, while the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) asked for a 148 per cent increase in tariffs for 2022.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) proposed a tariff increase of 37 per cent, Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), 113 percent, and Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), 48 per cent increase in transmission charge.

Meanwhile, PUCR has said that it would protect consumers of electricity and water against the infliction of high tariffs by not transferring losses incurred by the utilities to consumers to worsen their plight.

And the PURC at a press conference said it has decided to increase the end-user rate for water and electricity by less than 30% each due to the current hardships.

According to the Commission, the new tariffs are expected to take effect on September 1, 2022.
